There will be two contested Washington County races this spring, for district judge and for sheriff, in the Republican primary on May 24.

District judge race

District Judge Jerry Turner is retiring and attorneys Alex Odom and Tracy Turner announced last year their intentions to seek the position. Judge Turner was a Democrat but the two newcomers are both running as Republicans.

It became a spirited contest early with lots of signs going up.

Sheriff Richard Stringer, who has been a Democrat for years has switched to the Republican Party. He is seeking re-election and is being challenged for the GOP nomination by Chris Edmunds, the police chief of Millry.

Jason Sullivan is running unopposed for sheriff on the Democratic ticket and he and the winner of the Republican contest will compete in the Nov. 8 General Election.

Commission race

Commissioners Allen Bailey, District 2, and Jason Boothe, District 4, also switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party last year. Bailey will be opposed in the Republican primary by Gill Cotton. Boothe has no opposition.

Larry Daugherty, the incumbent Republican coroner, is also unopposed for re-election.

Republican county school board member DeWayne Byrd in District 2 is unopposed in the Republican primary. In District 3, incumbent David Dees will face Kevin Dailey in the primary.

Dr. Alfred Taylor has qualified as a Democrat for the District 2 seat. He and Byrd will compete in the General Election.
