Relay for Life announces upcoming fund-raisers

Residents of Jackson will soon have two opportunities to join the fight against cancer through Relay for Life fund-raisers.

In addition to events held by individual teams, the Jackson Relay for Life Committee recently announced a pair of fundraising programs.

Publicity Chair Bridgett Powell said Relay has always been a popular event in Jackson, because cancer impacts so many people.

“The people in this community all have a personal connection to Relay because they, or someone in their family, has been affected by cancer,” she said. “It brings us all together to try to raise money for research.”

The first event, “Survivors’ Sunday,” will take place on Feb. 16. On this Sunday, cancer survivors are recognized and celebrated.

A special offering is collected, al- lowing church members to make a contribution to the American Cancer Society in honor of or in memory of cancer patients.

Churches have also donated a portion of the general benevolent offering as part of their Survivors’ Sunday contribution.

Checks should be made payable to the American Cancer Society. All donations are tax deductible. Contributions can also be mailed to the American Cancer Society at 900 Western American Circle, Suite 101, Mobile, AL 36609 (c/o Jackson Relay for Life).

In the spring, Relay also plans to hold its “Paint the Town Purple” event.

Everyone is asked to purchase a purple bow for a $10 donation. Bows will be placed on April 7 to support Jackson’s May 2 Relay for Life event.

Money must be turned in by March 6.

This year’s goal, Powell said, is $40,000. Relay set a goal of $30,000 in 2013 and surpassed it with $48,000 in donations.

Powell said the 2013 Relay was different than years past because of the relaxed environment. This year’s event, she said, will follow a similar format.

“Last year was great because we were able to enjoy the survivors and enjoy the spirit of the event,” she said. “Mrs. (Billie Ann) Sellers and the organizers did a great job.”
