Mayor and council begin new terms

Jackson Mayor Richard Long and city council members were sworn in by Clarke County District Judge J. R. Morgan Monday night during an organizational meeting at city hall.

Long and council members Eldridge Jackson Jr., Paul South, Dwight Goolsby, Jane James, Daron Bolen and Jimmy Atchison were sworn in separately. Atchison is the new member of the council, winning the seat previously held by Eddie Huggins who did not seek re-election.

The following items were approved during the short meeting:

• Councilman Paul South was named as Mayor Pro-Tem.

• Mayor Long was designated as the city representative to the board of directors of Clarke Mobile Counties Gas.

• Department heads were appointed: Betty Powell, city clerk, treasurer and mayor’s executive assistant; Kevin Woodson, Public Works Director and Building Inspector; Charles Burge, Police Chief; and Bobby Brooks, Fire Chief.

• Chris Bailey was appointed as Municipal Judge; Lamar Johnson, Municipal Prosecutor; and Bruce Wilson, Municipal Attorney.

• Capstone Bank, First United Security Bank and Merchants Bank were named as bank depositories for the city.

• The next council meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Nov. 13 to make time for the city Christmas Tree lighting at 6 p.m.
