Bids for Jackson bridge to be let this month





The Clarke County Commission approved paying a $5,126.25 invoice from Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood for the County Road 15 road and bridge project in Jackson at its Tuesday meeting.

The county will be reimbursed by the Alabama Department of Transportation, said county engineer Danny Overton.

Bids for the $6 to $7 million project should be let July 26, he said. Once let, it will be two to three months before construction begins. The construction, replacing two bridges and a mile of roadway, will take 400 working days (two years).

In other business the commission:

– The commission approved a five-year contract with the White Smith Land Company for a gravel pit in the Whatley community. The contract involves 47 total acres with the county road and bridge department utilizes five acres-at-a time, Overton said. “We’re planning on disturbing as little as we can, in order to minimize the impact to the property,” the engineer said. The cost is 50 cents-per-yard in material moved, said county attorney Bruce Wilson.

There is also a $450-anacre disturbance fee the county must pay. If the property owner loses trees during the gravel removal, they wanted compensation, Wilson said.

The county must also apply for a permit from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), Overton said.

– A resolution was approved recognizing the 100th anniversary July 14 of Greater Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church on Walker Springs Road in Jackson.

– The commission renewed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) for the use of two state-owned 55 kw generators in the event of a major weather emergency. The county has had the two generators since 2009 and provides maintenance and fuel.

The county may also receive a third generator that Mobile County no longer needs, said Roy Waite, county EMA director.

• The six-month probationary period has ended for county employees Alec Rush and Bobby Smith (road and bridge) and Danny Broadhead (maintenance supervisor in the courthouse).

• The commission approved the Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission (ATRC) Senior Aides Program contract. The county only sponsors one senior aide at the Choctaw Bluff senior center.
