These are just some of the 150 first-grade pupils from Joe M. Gilmore School who visited the office of The South Alabamian. They were taken on a tour of the building and shown how the paper is prepared for publication each week. Several of the many machines used in setting type and headlines, photographing pages, cutting paper and addressing newspapers where shown to the pupils by the editor.

These are some of the paintings of Jackson area youngsters which now hang in the Jackson Public Library. Craig Crew and Ray Pezent are displaying some of their work. Others whose paintings are on display are Cariel Henderson and Susan Anderson. All are students of Mrs. Odell Head of Jackson.

The Jackson Academy “B” team, is undefeated thus far this season. Members are front row, from left, Lee Daugherty, manager, Rich Bowling, Drew (Stick) Outlaw, Randy Denton and Clint Chalkley; back row, Allan Steele, manager, Frank Woodson, David Bumpers, John Plummer, Freddie Dumas, Les Chalkley and Coach Heathcock.

The St. Stephens school building was built around 1890 and dismantled in 1958 after being sold at public auction. This picture was loaned to The South Alabamian by Mrs. Rufus Beech of Leroy.

Ben Ellis, left, presents Lion of the Year plaque to George Jones, the first recipient of the new honor decided upon by the club. Mr. Jones was recognized for his support of many Lions community projects, including Boy Scouts and summer baseball work, and especially for his outstanding work on the light bulb, broom and mop sale last fall, said Mr. Ellis, who is club president.
