Alabama Southern

Community College

Music scholarships are available at Alabama Southern Community College. Auditions will be Aug. 10, 11 and 12. Call 334-750- 4230 for further information and to schedule an audition time.

Coffeeville High School

The faculty/staff of Coffeeville High School is preparing for a productive school year. Registration will be on the first day of classes, Monday, Aug. 9.

The uniform policy remains the same until winter when students will need jackets, sweatshirts, etc. A copy of the policy is available at the school office.

Gillmore Elementary

Gillmore Elementary School will host a “Meet the Teachers Day” on Thursday, Aug. 5, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet teachers, see the classrooms and bring supplies.

Jackson Academy

To prepare for returning to class on Aug. 9, one-half day, Jackson Academy students and parents are encouraged to attend an open house on Thursday, Aug. 5 at 5:30.

Principal Robert Andress has announced that open house will include the introduction of teachers, the football and volleyball teams and the cheerleaders.

The school will be open for students to check-out their classrooms.

Principal Andress said there will be a cookout including burgers and hotdogs and at the end of the evening a team scrimmage.

Jackson High School

Freshman and new student orientation at Jackson High School will be Thursday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m.

Student schedules will be available based on the following schedule: Tuesday, Aug. 3, 12th grade, 9 a.m.- 12 noon; 11th grade, 1-4 p.m.; Wednesday, Aug. 4, 10th grade, 9 a.m. - 12 noon; and 9th grade, 1-4 p.m.

Fees will be paid at the time schedules are picked up.

There will also be a JHS senior meeting on Monday, Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m. Contact Kendra Ezell, 589-9796, for additional information. Senior portraits will be Aug. 5 and 6 in the auditorium. Bill Miller Photography will send postcards to all seniors with the specific date and time.

Several styles of school T-shirts are on sale in the office. Short sleeve shirts are $12, long-sleeve shirts are $15. Sweatshirts are also available for $25.

Jackson Intermediate

School

Jackson Intermediate School has released the following dates to remember:

Registration and Meet the Teachers will Aug. 5, from 3:30 -5:30 p.m.; teacher inservice will be Friday, Aug. 6, as well as a school supply drive sponsored by Channel 15 at Walmart from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m.

School will resume for the first full day for students on Aug. 9.

On Aug. 26, there will be Boy Scout registration at 7 p.m. in the JIS gym; PTO open house will be Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.; and fall pictures will be taken on Sept. 9.

STI Home will be available again this year. With this program, parents may access their child's grades via the Internet from home at any time to monitor their progress in the classroom. Go to: www.clarkecounty.jis. schoolinsites.com

Jackson Middle School

Jackson Middle School is excited about the improvements at the school and is looking forward to the upcoming school year. Several improvements have been made to the interior and exterior of the campus. A new camera system has been installed to improve security and interactive boards to update technology in the classrooms.

On the outside, wheelchair ramps are being built in three locations making the building accessible to those with disabilities. The drainage problem on the back campus near the cafeteria has been corrected and a speed bump built to improve safety as students load/unload the buses on the back campus.

Registraton is Aug. 4, 1- 5 p.m., in the cafeteria as well as the first day of classes Aug. 9.

Supply lists are available at the school or Walmart.

Leroy High School

Leroy High School will host an open house Thursday, Aug. 5 from 4-7 p.m. Students may drop off supplies during the meet and greet time. An assembly will be at 6:30 in the auditorium, dismissal procedures will be discussed.

All parents are encouraged to attend, especially if their student is a car rider.

Travelers on Highway 43 will view the construction of the new high school building that is well underway. As with most construction there are inconveniences.

With the start of school a week away, there are major traffic concerns from parents, faculty and staff. A traffic plan can be found on the school’s Web site at www.wcbek12.org after navigating to LHS.

The Web site is under new management and will be a valuable source of information. Included will be daily announcements and highlights of the successes of students, both academically and athletically. In some cases, school assignments will be available. Parents may also purchase spirit shirts (that may be worn every Friday) and other personalized spirit items.

Everyone is encouraged to visit the site regularly.

McIntosh High School

The following important dates have been announced by McIntosh High School for the upcoming school year:

July 28, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., pre-registration; Aug. 3, 6 p.m., mandatory meeting for volleyball players and parents; Aug. 3, 6:30 p.m., PTO meeting;

Aug. 4-6, faculty and staff Washington County Institute at McIntosh High School and Camp Beckwith.

The first day of classes will be Aug. 9; Aug. 11, purchase lockers ($10 fee) and sports physicals will be offered at 1 p.m. ($5 fee).

On Aug. 17, MHS will host an open house for students and parents; Oct.15, will be the date of homecoming.

All student-athletes participating in a fall sport must provide completed physical and immunization records to the school nurse before mandatory practices begin.

Students are NOT allowed to share lockers.

Student drivers must pay a $20 parking fee and provide a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

All are encouraged to join the MHS Alumni Association; meetings are the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.

The 2010-2011 uniform policy at MHS is as follows: Grades 6, 7 and 8 – gray polo style shirt with khaki bottom (Cargo pants are NOT allowed); Grades 9, 10 and 11 – white or navy polo style shirt with khaki bottom; Grade 12 – gold polo style shirt with khaki bottom; P.E. classes – All students will dress for P.E. in a white T-shirt and dark shorts.

Millry High School

“We are excited at Millry High School about the start of a new year,” said a school spokesman.

Students will experience a lot of changes when they arrive. John Carter is the new principal. Other new faces include head football coach Billy Gardner, head girls basketball coach Brad Johnson, band director Daniel Griffin and custodian Mark Dees.

Teachers will report to work on Aug. 4. The first day for students will be Aug. 9. An open house date will be set by the MHS PTO within the next few days.

Supply lists for the elementary grades may be picked up at the office.
