Elaine Beech Elaine Beech Elaine Beech won all 34 polling boxes in Washington County Tuesday and she took 17 out of 20 in Clarke County Tuesday to overwhelmingly defeat Ozelle Hubert to win the Democratic nomination for the Alabama House of Representatives District 65.

Beech polled 4,353 votes to Hubert's 1,071 in the special primary to fill the vacancy created when Marc Keahey moved from the House seat to the State Senate via another special election in June.

The turnout was much better than many had anticipated—nearly 20 percent. There are approximately 27,405 voters in the district.

A breakdown of the boxes gives totals from the three counties.

Clarke (20 of 21 boxes): 1,365 for Beech to 325 for Hubert.

Choctaw (24 of 25 boxes): 752 for Beech and 180 for Hubert.

Washington (34 of 35 boxes): 2,236 for Beech and 566 for Hubert.

Beech is a pharmacist and owned her own business at one time. Now she is the pharmacist at the Washington County Infirmary in Chatom. She is also an elected member of the Washington County Board of Education.

Hubert is also a pharmacist, the head pharmacist at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Jackson.

Beech will face Republican Jerry Reed of Jackson in a Nov. 3 general election. That contest is certain to be more exciting than the primary as the Democrats and Republicans wrestle for the seat.

Reed is a retired State Farm Insurance agent who also served as principal and coach at Leroy High School.
