Technology literacy lacking in WashCo school system It should have been the most routine Washington County School Board meeting of the year with an agenda of products bids to be voted upon; however, Betty Brackin of Leroy High School not only urged the adoption of the System Technology Plan, but she stressed that it was extremely vital. Students begin with technology instruction in kindergarten and are tested after the eighth grade. This year's ninth graders in Washington County tested woefully inadequate in technology literacy. No schools met state standards in technology. Only one student in the district passed the technology literacy test. The board emphasized that the system needs to focus on teacher training for this curriculum. Bids Bids were accepted as follows: •Propane gas - South Alabama Propane Gas •Heating oil, petroleum products - Bumpers Oil •Tires - Wingfoot Commercial Tires •Janitorial supplies - Dade Paper and Bag Company, and Central Supply Company. •The board approved a 21st Century Contract for Project Bulldog with the WCHS Band Boosters. Personnel: •Lwana Burros was hired as Spanish teacher at McIntosh High School. •Jean Guy, bus driver, was granted family medical leave at WCHS •Larry Moss, chief financial officer, presented Budget Hearing No. 2. Following the conclusion of the agenda, the board entered an executive session. |
