Adversity means nothing to J.R.

Kelly, 11, is the son of Jennifer Watford and loves the water. This year, with the help of Jackson lifeguard and swimming instructor Matt Moorer, he learned to swim. He even takes jumps and dives off the pier and diving board at the deep end of H.W. Pearce Memorial Park's swimming pool.
Moorer, who is in his first year as a swimming instructor at the pool, said he has never seen anyone with Kelly's determination. "He has come a long way in a very short time," he added.
The two enjoy the time they have working together in the pool. Moorer said he kept working with Kelly until he learned the side stroke. "He can now swim anywhere," he said.
Kelly is not afraid of the water at all. The day after returning to Jackson, June 3, from his dad's home in Florida, he began going to the pool. "Anyone can learn to swim if I can," he said. "I love the water."
Swimming is not the only sport Kelly has participated in. He enjoys team sports as well. He has played on several Little League teams in Grove Hill and enjoys playing basketball. He added that he has never let being born with one arm and one leg limit him in his goals.
Those wanting to take swimming lessons at the pool have one more chance. The last week for lessons this year is July 6-10. Today (Thursday) is the last day to register. Members and nonmembers are welcome. Call (251) 246-7090 for more information.
