July 4th events planned

Towns in Clarke and Washington counties have a host of family-oriented activities planned to observe the July 4th celebration.

Jackson

The City of Jackson will sponsor its annual fireworks show July 3 at North Jackson Park. This year's event is planned to begin around 9 p.m. and will feature a 30-minute show.

Coffeeville

A music festival will be conducted, July 4, at 21370 Highway 69 South, Coffeeville to support providing scholarships for local students. This is a privately sponsored event. Contact Dr. Edwina Hart at (251) 276-3770 or (251) 769-1168 for more information.

The town will conduct its annual fireworks show at Coffeeville High School around or shortly after 8 p.m.

Thomasville

Thomasville's celebration will be July 3, beginning with the Children's Parade at 4 p.m. Registration for the parade will be at 3:45.

Games, waterslides and food booths will be open at 4:30 p.m. Judging of the annual barbecue contest will begin at 5:45, followed by the Clarke County Idol contest at 6 p.m.

The fireworks show will begin downtown at dark. Everyone is encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and enjoy the evening's events, which are sponsored by the Southwest Alabama Chamber of Commerce.

McIntosh

McIntosh will celebrate Independence Day July 4, with music provided by Jerry and Tammy Sullivan at 7 p.m. The McIntosh Rescue Squad will sell refreshments and the fireworks will begin at dusk (around 8:30 p.m.). The public is invited to attend.

Chatom

The Town of Chatom will host its celebration July 4, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Chatom Community Center and will offer a host of family-oriented activites throughout the evening. They include the mechanical bull challenge, the Washington County Singer's Showcase at 6 p.m., BMX bicycle stunt show, plenty of food and a fireworks show at 9 p.m.

An added attraction to this year's event will be the Smithsonian's traveling exhibit "New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music," which will be hosted by the Washington County Public Library. Shuttles will run from the community center to the library during the celebration.
