Man who aided escapee caught
The Washington County Sheriff's Department's search for a man who aided a county inmate who escaped from a work crew in the Fairford area, June 15, ended when he was apprehended Tuesday, June 23.
According to Washington County Sheriff Richard Stringer, Billy Joe Turner, 31, of Mt. Vernon was captured in the Theodore area by Mobile County authorities and returned to Washington County. "From what I understand he was arrested along with several other people, some who the Mobile County Sheriff's Department possibly had warrants on," he said.
Turner is accused of aiding David Lee Gurley in his escape from the county work crew. On June 15, Gurley stepped off the right-of-way and shed his orange jumpsuit, before fleeing the area. He and Turner fled on a 4-wheeler and were pursued by Washington County deputies and other local law enforcement agencies well into the early morning hours of the next day.
During the pursuit, it was discovered that the 4-wheeler was stolen after the two men abandoned it and fled on foot. As a result Turner faces theft charges.
Gurley was captured two days later on June 17, by Mobile County and federal law enforcement officials. He remains incarcerated in Mobile County on charges he faces there.
Turner faces charges of aiding and abetting an escapee, first degree receiving stolen property and revocation of probation. His bond has been set at $12,500.
