This could possibly be the beginning of the funnel cloud that was reportedly observed, Sunday, April 19, in the Toddtown/McVay area north of Jackson. The tornado was associated with a band of severe thunderstorms that swept through the area that afternoon. Two Washington County men are in custody and charged in separate thefts and break-ins that occurred in Jackson and Chatom. According to Jackson Police Detective Richard Harvey, Chris James, 23, who is said to live in both Wagarville and Coffeeville, was arrested Thursday, April 16, in connection with a theft of four tires from a residence on Highway 69, north of Jackson. The Clarke County Historical Society is currently working with a developer to turn the Ft. Sinquefield site into a park with interpretive exhibits and self-guiding trails. The students at Jackson High School participated in one of the nation's top alcohol awareness programs by driving a DUI/DWI simulator on Friday, April 17. A video was also presented that included live footage and interviews with students and parents who were involved in alcohol-related accidents. More...

John Lucius Bell Sr., 95, a native of Edison, Ga., and resident of Chatom, died April 21, 2009 at the Washington County Nursing Home in Chatom. A member and deacon of Chatom Baptist Church for 50 years, he was also a Mason, a Shriner, Chatom's first town marshall, the first water board superintendent and a charter member of Chatom's Volunteer Fire Department.
