SPORTS REPORT
There are a few things we do know about coach Jeff Kelly's first Aggie squad. The first is the JHS defense is for real. We all knew the defensive line with Gabriel Mass, Shuntavis Simms and Karl Darrington would be pretty solid but the linebackers and secondary have been just as impressive in the early going. Another thing we know is that Chad Dickinson is a true weapon as a punter. The former Clarke Prep star has constantly pinned opponents inside the 10-yard line and his skills should be a big asset as the season progresses. I would not be surprised to see some colleges start calling on the Aggie punter. A championship team almost always begins with special teams and defense and the Aggies certainly have both of those. But the question remains, is this a championship offense? While the potential is there for this to be a pretty good offensive unit, it is still a work in progress. The offensive line has been pretty solid along with outstanding running from Damion Bracy, William Taylor and Isaiah Boykin. Corey Besteda has been, well, what you would expect from a college prospect. He has been almost impossible to stop whether it has been running, throwing or catching. If the Aggies can start connecting on a few deep balls the offense will really take flight and be a force. So it depends on what "being back" means to you as to whether the Aggies are back. Jackson has found its swagger it had several years ago. The Aggies are big, fast, physical and well-coached. They are a team that you do not want to see on your schedule. So in that sense, they are back. But before the Aggies can take the throne away from the "big boys" like Leroy, Thomasville and Sweet Water, they need to continue to do what they have been doing. Win. We will know for sure in the coming weeks just what this Aggie squad is made up of. After another ho-hum game this week against a struggling Andalusia team, JHS hosts No. 1 Leroy (2A) and No. 4 UMS Wright (4A) at Legion Field in back-to-back weeks.
After those games, we will know whether or not the Aggies are back.
