Leroy Bears win state title!
"It has been tremendous," Leroy coach Danny Powell said of his teams back-to-back championships in football and baseball. "My job has been to just not mess things up. We have great kids." Series MVP Clint Moseley got the Bears on the board early with a single that scored Grant Brown in the bottom of the first. Leroy added two more runs when Cliff Covington lined a two-run single to center field to give the Bears an early 3-0 lead. The Bears answered with four more in the second and three in the third capped off by Moseley's second homer of the series."It is great to win the MVP," Clint Moseley said. "But nothing compares to winning state with my teammates."
Leroy forces rubber-game Leroy answered the call in game two with a 17-7 win in six innings thanks to a pair of three-run homers by Clint Moseley and Chris Weaver. The Bears erupted for 14 hits in the second game to pick up the win. "I think the second game will give us some momentum heading into the deciding game," Moseley said afterwards. "In the first game we were kind of quiet. I am not sure what the reason was. But I think we will come in with some confidence (in game three) and swing the bats well. We knew Vanhorn was their best pitcher; we knew once we got past him we could hit the ball a little bit better," Moseley said of Mars Hill ace Mark Vanhorn, who allowed six runs on nine hits to earn the win in the opener.
Moseley had two hits and five RBI to lead the Bears at the plate. Brown, Scoggins, Covington, Blunt and Weaver also had two hits. Brandon Jones improved to 12-1 on the mound as the senior scattered nine hits and struck out four. Bears drop game one Leroy gave up five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and left 12 batters on base to fall to Mars Hill Bible 7-6 in the first game. Leroy got on the board again in the top of third when Ervin hit a blooper to right field to score Cliff Covington and put the Bear's up 3- 2. With the score still 3-2 in the sixth, Brown started some fireworks with a two-out triple. Moseley followed the triple with a infield single to score Brown and push the Bear lead to 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Panthers converted four hits, a sacrifice, and two Bear miscues into five runs to give Mars Hill a 7- 4 advantage heading into the Bears' last at bat. Aerik Davis got things going in the top of the seventh for the Bears with a one-out single up the middle.
