Litter contest winners announced

Clarke County Citizens against Littering recently recognized the winners of its Anti-Litter Video, Essay and Poster contests in Clarke County held in association with the Spring Cleanup just completed in the county under the sponsorship of Alabama People against a Littered State (PALS).

Danielle Gill, a senior at Jackson High School, was First Place winner of the video contest, which was open to high school students. Her winning video will be used in all the schools in the county in future litter education, and has been sent to Alabama PALS in Montgomery, where it may be used statewide. Second Place in the video contest went to the Visual Arts Department at Clarke County High School. This class is under the direction of Jaime Bradford.

The essay contest was open to middle and intermediate school students. First Place was won by Forrest Campbell of Thomasville Elementary School. Mrs. Anderson is his teacher. Second Place winner was Elisha Ensley of Jackson Intermediate School, Lisa Donald, teacher. Tamia Fluker of Mrs. Carpenter's class at Grove Hill Elementary was Third Place Winner. Honorable Mention Essays were written by Krista Pugh and Amerie Gramelspacher of Thomasville Elementary School, Robert Bradley of Grove Hill Elementary School and Shameka Shante Lewis of Coffeeville High School.

The poster contest invited entries from students in the upper elementary grades, and the First Place winner in this contest was Casen Young of Mrs. Jackson's class at Grove Hill Elementary, Ivan Stallworth of Jackson Intermediate School, Mrs. Dean's class, was the Second Place winner. Third Place went to Mardeysia Thomas of Coffeeville High School in Mrs. Marbley's class. Almee Young, in Mrs. Harris's class at Thomasville Elementary School won Honorable Mention in the poster contest.

All the place-winning entries have been sent to Alabama PALS in Montgomery for judging at the state level, and results will be known at the annual meeting of PALS in November. "We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to all the teachers in the county who aid in anti-litter education," said Committee chairman, Patricia DuBose. "The committee is very grateful to First United Security Bank, Merchants Bank, Regions Bank, McDonald's, Patricia DuBose and Grove Hill chamber for the prizes donated for the winners."
