Ciba hosts Groundwater Festival for Washington County fourth graders
They were provided information on drinking water and how to protect it for themselves and future generations. Fun activities were incorporated into classroom sessions, allowing students to participate in water related experiments, activities and entertainment designed to help them retain environmental principles of water. They also enjoyed an entertainment show presented by the Fishin' Magicians. Each student, teacher and volunteer received a complimentary T-shirt featuring artwork designed by Kanesha Jordan from McIntosh Elementary as part of the festival's T-shirt design contest. As winner of the design contest, Jordan received a $50 savings bond and her teacher, Betina Johnson, received a $50 gift certificate. Local high school student volunteers from each high school in Washington County also took part in the event providing interactive classroom instruction. The annual Groundwater Festival is hosted by Ciba Corporation and sponsored by Tate & Lyle, ADEM, Alabama Coastal Foundation, Inc., Ciba Corporation, Coca Cola Bottling Company, Frankville Water & Fire Protection Authority, Leroy Volunteer Fire Department, Leroy Water Authority, McIntosh Water Authority, Pine City Lawn & Garden, Inc., St. Stephens Water System, Capstone Bank, Town of Chatom Utilities Board, Washington County Water & Fire Protection Authority, and Alabama's Water Environment Association.
The Groundwater Festival Planning Committee includes Anna Keene representing the Alabama Coastal Foundation, Joe Palmer representing Leroy Water Authority, Rose Ann Smith representing St. Stephens Water System, Pam Phillips representing McIntosh Water Authority, Margaret Odom representing the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and Lisa Dyess and Marlene Bumpers representing Ciba.
