Adams, Orso murder trials end with plea bargains Two murder trials in Washington County Court last week ended with plea bargains for both defendants. Alvin B. Adams, 24, of McIntosh, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Nov. 28, 2005 shooting death of Robert Bell, 20. He recieved a 15-year suspended sentence, was ordered to serve three years and placed on probation for five years. The incident reportedly took place following an argument between the two men, which resulted in a physical altercation. After the fight was broken up by others at the scene, Adams left and was said to have returned approximately an hour later, shooting Bell in the abdomen. Bell was flown by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center where he died during surgery. Orso gets 20 years Scarlett A. Orso pleaded guilty to manslaugter in the April 24, 2006, shooting death of Arthur J. "Emmet" Snow. She was sentenced to 20 years in state prison. Snow was shot twice with a 12-gauge shotgun. His body was found at the front door steps of Ms. Orso's mobile home which was located on land owned by Snow. Angel Weaver was present in the mobile home with Orso when Orso shot Snow. At a preliminary hearing, Weaver testified that while in a back bedroom of the home, she heard shots. After the shooting ceased, she came out and saw Orso holding the shotgun. According to Weaver, Orso stated, "I just killed Emmet. Call 911." According to a press release by the First Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, Orso gave statements to Washington County deputies Luke Singleton and Donnie Sullivan at the crime scene where she confessed to shooting Snow. She was later interrogated by deputies Ronnie Sullivan and John Traylor at the Washington County Jail and again confessed to shooting Snow. During an interview with a Mobile newspaper reporter, she repeated that she shot Mr. Snow. However, when she entered her guilty plea, she claimed that Charles Douglas Sullivan was present when the shooting occurred and that he was involved in the shooting. "I was never concerned with her contentions that Sullivan was involved," said District Attorney Spencer Walker. "Her initial statements to law enforcement were that she shot Snow because she was the victim of ongoing domestic violence. The physical evidence at the scene clearly demonstrated that she shot Mr. Snow. I believe she concocted this story about Sullivan after an attorney informed her that shooting Snow twice complicated her claims of self-defense." Other cases •Michelle Clifton entered a blind plea to the June 8, 2007, robbery and assault of Altharis Threatt at her business in Calvert. A blind plea means that the defendant was not offered a plea bargain agreement. The defendant will be sentenced at a hearing by the judge in the same manner as if she had been found guilty after a jury trial. •Samuel Randall pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and received a 10-year suspended sentence, placed on probation five years and ordered to serve nine months in state prison. •Terry Lee Williams pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child and received a 90- day suspended sentence and was placed on probation for two years. •Mack C.
