Fulton is our area's own Walnut Grove, just like 'Little House on the Prairie' Linda Brown's recently published book, "Fulton Tales," brings a lot of my childhood memories to mind. I grew up in a small town similar to Fulton. No Dr. Jack, no Scotch Lumber but we did have a Laura Ingalls- me. This also took place about the same time as many of the stories in "Fulton Tales," in the 1950s and 1960s. So by coincidence, Fulton and Walnut Grove of "Little House on the Prairie" are much alike. As you get into Fulton, crossing the Dr. Jack Dozier Bridge, there used to be a wooden house or store. On my last trip to Fulton it was torn down. That was, we shall say, the "Little House." Now there is a double wide home where Larry Bradford lives- the town's Isaiah Edwards. Next is Scotch Lumber Company, the town's only industry. Owner Billy Harrigan was the town's "Lars" who owns the mill on "Little House." Next, Munn's Store, or shall we say, Olsen's Mercantile. I'm sure there are a Nels and Harriet Olsen in Fulton. Also a Nellie and Willie Olsen had to be there at one time or another. Walnut Grove had no sheriff but Police Chief Larry Hicks could very well be Jonathan, friend of the Ingalls. Dr. Baker- the only doctor in this town- is the one and only Dr. Jack Dozier, complete with black bag and house calls. OK, now for Rev. Alden- that could be Fulton's very nice mayor, Mike Norris. The Roost Pole in the center of Fulton is a gathering spot for citizens to talk about issues and events. Only on one occasion did Walnut Grove have need for a fire department. The chief had no name but we'll give him one- Mr. Bedwell. We'll say that Charles and Caroline Ingalls are the Browns- Randall and Linda, the source and writer for "Fulton Tales." I'm sure they have a Laura in their family. This is a compliment to the town of Fulton and its residents. Take a ride there soon. Go in the store for a cold drink and a welcome. This town is one of a kind- the people are friendly and your first trip won't be your last. Maureen Mohr,
