Forest fire threatens hunting camp

St. Stephens Fire Department was paged out to a forest fire, Thursday, May 1, near a hunting camp located off the Mobile Cut-off Road. The fire burned a number of acres approximately 3 miles from U.S. Highway 43. St. Stephens initially responded with its brush truck, but upon arrival discovered the fire to be much larger than originally thought and called for one of the department's pumper trucks to be brought to the scene. For awhile, firefighters were unable to gain access to the road to the hunting camp due to a locked gate. Once the lock was removed they were able to better fight the blaze keeping it away from the camp. Due to the size of the fire, Wagarville and Leroy fire departments were called to the scene to assist. Firefighters remained for at least two hours until they were confident the fire was out and did not threaten any structures. (SA photo by Evan Carden)
