Burn victims airlifted after explosion at LP plant An explosion at Louisiana- Pacific's Clarke OSB mill south of Thomasville early Wednesday morning injured six workers and has temporarily shut down the plant. The Thomasville Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene at 1:56 a.m., Wednesday morning, but the page firefighters received was for a brush fire, so the first truck on scene was a brush truck. Minutes after the first page, a corrected page went out and the department responded with more firefighters and trucks, said Mayor Sheldon Day, who also serves as a volunteer firefighter. The fire started at the east end of the plant's main building fueled by a thermal oil used in the manufacturing process to make oriented strand board, said Roy Waite, Clarke County EMA director. The oil is kept at a very high temperature and there were 36,000 gallons of it at the plant site. Workers were unable to put the initial fire out and it apparently flashed over to a much larger fire. Four of the workers were flown by helicopter to USA Medical Center in Mobile suffering burns. The other two workers were treated at the scene. Names of the workers were not available at press time. The fire was extinguished by approximately 3:45 a.m. Waite said. The plant was running pro- duction when the fire broke out. There were about 15 workers present when the explosion occurred. About 140 people are employed at the plant. Statements from L-P officials were not available at press time.
A number of local fire departments and emergency agencies responded to assist.
