White Smith Library staff attends Legislative Day

Rep. Marc Keahey, D-Grove Hill, presents a state aid check to White Smith Memorial Library director Debra M. Grayson, left, and librarian assistant Terri Flowers during Legislative Day on April 8 at the Alabama State House in Montgomery.
Representatives from White Smith Memorial Library were among hundreds of Alabama librarians converged on the Alabama State House April 8 for a special visit with their legislators.

Staff and board members from more than 70 public libraries attended Legislative Day 2008, sponsored by the Alabama Public Library Service. The annual event was held to thank legislators for their much-needed support of the state's public libraries, and to ask that the support continue.

While at the State House, the librarians were photographed receiving their state aid checks for the third quarter of FY2008. The libraries' state aid for the entire fiscal year totals approximately $5.4 million.

Legislators were instrumental in securing for the public libraries $5.8 million of the historic $1.07 billion school bond issue passed last year. That money will go toward construction of new libraries and repairs to existing facilities.

The libraries earlier this year were also awarded $1 million in construction grants from APLS' budget. Grants ranged in size from about $1,000 to $50,000.
