The No.1 ranked Leroy Bears advanced to the third round of the AHSAA playoffs with a twogame sweep of the second ranked G.W. Long Rebels Friday, April 25 at Pop Powell Stadium.

In two of the last three seasons, the winner of this series has gone on to win the state championship.

"This was a good win for us," Leroy coach Danny Powell said.

Long jumped on Leroy 3-0 in the first inning of the opening game thanks to a two-run homer by Cass Abercrombie and a solo shot by Ryan Jacobs.

After a scoreless bottom of the first for the Bears, Chris Weaver hit a two-run bomb to cut the lead to 3-2. Abercrombie went yard again in the top of the third to extend the Rebel lead to 4-2.

In the bottom half of the third, Grant Brown walked, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Rebel lead back to one run at 4-3.

The Bears had their biggest inning in the bottom of the fifth, plating three runs.

Will Blount led off the inning with a walk and then Phillip Ervin reached on an error. Brown bunted them over and Clint Moseley and Brandon Jones followed up with RBI singles to put the Bears up 5-4. Moseley later scored on a wild pitch to extend the Leroy lead to 6-4.

G.W. Long's Jacobs hit his second homer of the day in the top of the sixth to pull the Rebels to 6-5 but that was as close as they would come.

Weaver and Blount hit backto back homers in the bottom half of the sixth to blow the game open and give the final score of 8-5.

Jones picked up the win on the mound to improve to 10-0 striking out nine and scattering eight hits.

Weaver led the Bears at the plate going 2-3 with two homers and three RBIs. Blount homered and Moseley and Jones had RBI singles to round out the game's top hitters.

Moseley shut down the Rebels in the second game as the Bears cruised to a series-winning 12-1 victory. Moseley went the distance, striking out eight while allowing two hits to improve to 9-1 on the year.

Jones was 3-5 with two doubles and two RBIs and Moseley was 3-5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs to lead the Bears at the plate.

Brown was 2-5 with two RBIs, Ervin had a two-run homer and Stephen Scoggins had a hit.

"In the first game we were behind until the fifth inning. They hit four homers on us to score all their runs. The second game, Moseley shut them down. I think he only allowed two hits." Powell said.

The Bears (30-3) will entertain Wicksburg (18-8) Friday, May 2 at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m in a best-ofthree series in Leroy.

"They have a good club. They beat Houston Academy this year and they are still in the playoffs. They have a good left-handed pitcher and a first baseman that really swings the bat well. I have heard they are a scrappy bunch. It is a plus for us to play the game at home," Powell said of the visiting Panthers.
