First wood pellets shipment made
 | | The Carl-T made its inaugural trip downstream through the Claiborne Lock on Friday, April 25, towing 1,500 tons of wood pellets manufactured at Dixie Pellets, LLC's new plant in Selma. Four other barges were being loaded at the Selma site. The $120 million Dixie Pellets plant may transport up to 500,000 tons of pellets annually by barge through the Southwest Alabama region's waterways. Preparations are currently underway by Dixie Pellets' mother company New Gas Concepts Inc., to build a similar plant in Jackson to produce even more of the pellets, which are shipped overseas to be used as fuel by industries. Some American industries are considering use of the fuel source as well. (Photo courtesy of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) |
