MARK YOUR CALENDAR Walking for Christ on May 17 Family, friends and all in the community are invited to a youth health walk-a-thon beginning at Thomasville High School on Gates Drive, May 17, 8-10 a.m. The event will continue at the Walnut Grove Community Worship Center in Morvin with youth fun day. SW Alabama Antique and Art Fair will be June 7 in Uriah Artists from all over southwest Alabama and northwest Florida will display their works June 7, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. in Uriah. Barbecue plates and sandwiches, along with a bake sale, auction, classic cars and music will also be available. The proceeds from this event will support a building fund for a memorial for the servicemen of south Monroe County who gave their lives in WWII. Alzheimer's/Caregivers Support Groups The Alzheimer's/Caregivers Support Group will meet Tuesday, May 6, 1 p.m. in the conference room of the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. Blood drive being hosted by JHS On May 12, a blood drive will be conducted at Jackson High School (JHS). The community can donate between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. in the auditorium at the school. The donations collected at this time will help to support the trauma centers in Mobile. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, Inc. is the sole supplier of blood and blood products to all hospitals in Mobile and two major hospitals in Baldwin County. Learn how you can become a volunteer and help improve the quality of life for others. 20th reunion meeting planned for class of '89 The Jackson High School Class of 1989 has scheduled a planning meeting to coordinate their 20th reunion Friday, May 23, 5:30 p.m. at the gazebo located at Joe M. Volunteers sought for hotel dig Persons interested in Alabama history and archaeology have an opportunity to assist in the excavation of a historic former hotel building in old St. Stephens Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The excavation of the Globe Hotel, circa 1815, will be conducted under the direction of archaeologist George Shorter of the University of South Alabama. Volunteers are urged to bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Youth, 12 and under, must be accompanied by a parent. Previous excavation experience is not required. Tools will be provided. Computer classes to be offered at WSL Basic computer classes will be offered by the White Smith Memorial Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 6-22, 10- 11:30 a.m. Each class member will receive a certificate of completion if they attend all six classes. Class size is limited to 10. Registration will continue through Friday, May 2. All classes will be conducted in the Alabama Southern Computer lab on the Jackson campus. Gates family hosts reunion The Gates family reunion (William and May Eve Stiffimire Gates family) and decoration at the Gates Family Cemetery in Syrene will be conducted May 3. Family members will gather at Gaston's Grill (old Ryan's Restaurant) on Highway 43 in Thomasville at 12 noon. Lunch can be purchased from Gaston's Grill. Fellowship and decoration will follow at the cemetery on County Road 35 at 2 p.m. Gospel music by Keel & Family from Grove Hill and a devotional will be part of the decoration service. Town of Coffeeville celebrates 200 years The town of Coffeeville will celebrate 200 years of success May 31. The genealogy committee encourages every citizen of Coffeeville to display his or her heritage on that day. Furnishing a display table and cover, artifacts can be loaned to the committee to be displayed and protected and returned that day. SWAIA to host workshop The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) is cosponsoring "A Roast of Clarke County Mayors" May 3, 6 p.m. at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House, downtown Jackson. Admission to this event is $5 per person. The Honorable U.S. Congressman Artur Davis will serve as the toastmaster and Mayor Sam Jones of Mobile will be the special guest. All are invited to participate including those in political office or organizations, regardless of party affiliation. Heart of Dixie Collectors Club meets last Monday of month The Heart of Dixie Collectors Club will meet the last Monday of every month at the Jackson Steakhouse at 7 p.m. in the meeting room.
