MARK YOUR CALENDAR Volunteers sought for hotel dig Persons interested in Alabama history and archaeology have an opportunity to assist in the excavation of a historic former hotel building in old St. Stephens Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. The excavation of the Globe Hotel, circa 1815, will be conducted under the direction of archaeologist George Shorter of the University of South Alabama. Volunteers are urged to bring lunch, water and sunscreen. Youth, 12 and under, must be accompanied by a parent. Previous excavation experience is not required. Tools will be provided. Computer classes to be offered at WSL Basic computer classes will be offered by the White Smith Memorial Library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 6-22, 10- 11:30 a.m. Each class member will receive a certificate of completion if they attend all six classes. Class size is limited to 10. Registration will continue through Friday, May 2. All classes will be conducted in the Alabama Southern Computer lab on the Jackson campus. Gates family hosts reunion The Gates family reunion (William and May Eve Stiffimire Gates family) and decoration at the Gates Family Cemetery in Syrene will be conducted May 3. Family members will gather at Gaston's Grill (old Ryan's Restaurant) on Highway 43 in Thomasville at 12 noon. Lunch can be purchased from Gaston's Grill. Fellowship and decoration will follow at the cemetery on County Road 35 at 2 p.m. Gospel music by Keel & Family from Grove Hill and a devotional will be part of the decoration service. Town of Coffeeville celebrates 200 years The town of Coffeeville will celebrate 200 years of success May 31. The genealogy committee encourages every citizen of Coffeeville to display his or her heritage on that day. Furnishing a display table and cover, artifacts can be loaned to the committee to be displayed and protected and returned that day. Dunagan to autograph 'A Yellow Watermelon' A book signing will take place Saturday, April 26, 2-4 p.m. at the Clarke County Museum. Grove Hill native Ted Dunagan will sign copies of his recently reprinted book, "A Yellow Watermelon." Set in Clarke County, Dunagan's book, although fiction is largely autobiographical. Mathews Cabin dedication will be April 27 at museum The public is invited to attend the dedication of the Josiah and Lucy Martin Mathews Cabin at the Clarke County Museum complex on Sunday, April 27 at 2:30 p.m. The keynote speaker, Dr. David Mathews, a Clarke County native now head of the Kettering Foundation in Dayton, Ohio, will give a history of the cabin, and the arduous restoration process will be described by Clarke County Historical Society (CCHS) members. He previously was president of the University of Alabama and served in the cabinet of President Gerald Ford. The two-pen log cabin was sold to the CCHS in 2005 by Lucy Oliver Dortch and her son, Bill, and moved from its location on Mathews Cemetery Road in Grove Hill to the museum. It was first built in the 1830s and occupied by pioneer settlers Josiah and Lucy Mathews. A reception will follow the dedication. OES hosts health fair The Bertha Mae Chapter No. 314 Order of the Eastern Star will host its annual health fair Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the grounds of the Jackson City Hall. There will be free screenings for blood pressure, glucose, hearing, speech, weight and more. Mini seminars on hospice care, nursing homes, immunization, nutrition, stress and others will be presented. This is a free community health awareness program and all are invited to attend. Citizens Against Litter announce April is 'Cleanup Month' The Clarke County Citizens Against Litter committee needs your help as April is statewide cleanup month. The committee is asking every citizen in Clarke County to assist in helping pick up litter if you are physically able. If all citizens took one large garbage bag and filled it with litter in their own area, Clarke County could be a cleaner county. Bags are available by contacting Rita Wilson at 251-276-3358. Everyone is encouraged to care about the county and not litter. Roberts to gather for reunion The annual reunion of descendants and relatives of William Riley Roberts and Florence Almanza Cobb Roberts will be Saturday, April 26, 10 a.m., at Witch Creek Baptist Church near Campbell. SWAIA to host workshop The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) is cosponsoring "A Roast of Clarke County Mayors" May 3, 6 p.m. at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House, downtown Jackson. Admission to this event is $5 per person. The Honorable U.S. Congressman Artur Davis will serve as the toastmaster and Mayor Sam Jones of Mobile will be the special guest. All are invited to participate including those in political office or organizations, regardless of party affiliation.
