Millry wins county tourney; Bears finish second The Millry Wildcats breezed through the Washington County tournament to improve to 23-5 on the season, winning the county championship in the process. Leroy had a strong performance with the Lady Bears only losses coming at the hands of the No. 2 Wildcats. Tournament roundup Millry 1, WCHS 0 Kristen Skinner struck out 16 and allowed only one hit as the Lady Wildcats opened up the Washington County tournament with a 1-0 blanking of the Washington County Bulldogs. Skinner also led Millry at the plate picking up three of the Wildcats' four hits. Whitney Clarke tripled in the bottom of the third and later scored the game's only run. Leroy 16, Fruitdale 3 The No. 9 ranked Bears belted Fruitdale 16-3 to advance to the winner's bracket on Friday against Millry. Meg Smith picked up the win on the mound for Leroy striking out two Pirates and allowing no hits in two innings of work. Kristian Atchison was 2-4 with four RBIs, Megan Goldman 3-4 with two RBIs, Meg Smith 3-4 with three RBIs and Alex Vick had three RBIs for the Lady Bears who exploded for seven runs in the second. Millry 12, Leroy 1 Skinner again had a brilliant performance on the hill holding the hard-hitting Bears to just one hit and 10 strikeouts in a 12- 1 victory. Heather Ryland took the loss for Leroy. Goldman had the only hit for the Bears who fell into the loser bracket with the loss. Jasmine Wells was 2-3 with two RBIs to lead Millry. Jessica Touchstone ended the game early with a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Leroy 7, WCHS 5 Leroy bounced back in the following game with a 7-5 win over Washington County, eliminating the Bulldogs from the tournament. Smith went the distance on the mound striking out eight Bulldogs while scattering five hits. Atchison was 2-4 with a RBI, and Smith added a single for LHS. With the Bears trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Ashlee Vick slapped a two-run triple down the line to tie the game 5-5. Leroy scored two more runs in the inning to cap a four-run seventh inning. Millry 4, Leroy 2 Skinner outlasted Bear ace Meg Smith in a 4-2 Wildcat win for the county championship. She struck out 12 Bears and allowed just one hit to improve to 15-2 on the season. Smith (8- 3) had a solid outing striking out seven Wildcats and scattering nine hits through seven innings but it wasn't enough for the Lady Bears. Alex Vick had a double and a run scored and Ashlee Vick had a single for the Bears. Whitney Clark was 3-3 with a run scored and a RBI and Jessalyn Hoffman was 3-4 with a run scored and a RBI for the Wildcats. "We ran up against a pretty good pitcher," Leroy coach Brian Henry said. "Our girls didn't really react well against Skinner. But overall we played well. Now we have to move on and get ready for the rest of the season."
The Tombigbee Classic begins this weekend with games being split between Jackson and Leroy. Brackets were not available at press time.
