Area Obituaries
Johnie Lamar Brown, 80, died March 26, 2008 at his Fruitdale residence. He was a native of Fruitdale and a resident of Panama City, Fla. A self-employed stump wood contractor, he was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII. Survivors include his wife, Doris Brown of Fruitdale; a son, Terry Lee Brown of Panama City; one daughter, Connie Sue Curran of Zachary, La.; two brothers, Daniel Brown of Fruitdale and Lamar Brown of State Line, Miss.; two sisters, Louise Coursey of Mobile and Imogene Baxter of Saraland; six grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were March 29 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom with interment in the Grace Williams Cemetery in Fruitdale. Thomas Ray McCorquodale Thomas Ray "Smokey" McCorquodale, a native of Salitpa and resident of Jackson, died March 29, 2008 at a health care facility at the age of 83. He was a tug boat captain for Warrior & Gulf Navigation, a U.S. Marine sergeant in WWII, and a member of the V.F.W. and McCanns United Methodist Church of Jackson. Survivors include his wife, Marie Dolbear McCorquodale of Jackson; one daughter, Jane McCorquodale Harwell of Jackson; three sisters, Margaret Dunn of Silsbee, Texas, Frances Bailey of Destin, Fla. and Flora Davis of Faunsdale; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were March 31 in the chapel of Lathan Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe McKinney officiating. Interment was at the River Hill Cemetery in Salitpa. Vernell Taylor Vernell Taylor, 53, of Jackson died March 31, 2008. A member of the St. James A.M.E. Church of Choctaw Bluff, she served on the culinary committee, was the church custodian and was president of the Pastor's Aide Society. She was employed with Stimpson's Hunting Club of Choctaw Bluff and was an alumni of the Jackson High School Class of 1973. Survivors include one daughter, Danielle Taylor Parker (Zerrick Gaines) of Jackson; two grandchildren; five sisters, Lorean (Jerdon Lee) Washington, Lillie (Freddie Jr.) Adams and Melesia Taylor, all of Jackson, Shirley Ann (Elder Blanche) Jones of Mobile and Sandra (Earl Jr.) Moore of Savannah, Ga.; five brothers, Charlie (Winnie) Taylor, Robert (Mattie Pearl) Taylor, David (Loretta) Taylor and Sidney Taylor, all of Jackson and Ernest (Beverly) Taylor of Detroit, Mich.
Public viewing will be Friday, April 4, 3 until 7 p.m. in the chapel of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. A second viewing will be Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. until the 12 noon funeral hour at the St. James A.M.E. Church of Choctaw Bluff. The Rev. Clausell Boykin is pastor and officiating minister. Interment will follow in the St. James Cemetery.
