WashCo Youth NAACP conducts first meeting
The meeting was conducted by the group's president Christopher Dixon. Approximately 30 young people attended the event and asked questions about the NAACP. Welcome was presented by Shanavia Ervin with a reading of Scriptures. Prayer was offered by Dixon and the group was led in song by Josh Trotter. The selection was "Pass Me Not Oh Gentle Savior." Deacon Willie Dixon delivered a message of encouragement about dealing with future challenges. Those included: •Abuse of minorities •Helping young people understand government and its operations •Training on how to prepare for interviews •Different types of county government systems •Updating computer skills
Following the question and answer portion of the program, Christopher Dixon presented a history of the NAACP. He explained that the organization was created for people of all races, genders, creeds and religions. "We fight against all racial and hatred discrimination," he said. Some of the objectives discussed by Dixon included ensuring the political, educational, social and economic equality of all citizens; achieving equality of rights and eliminating race prejudice among U.S. citizens; removing all barriers of racial discrimination. He concluded by saying, "We are the future. Our parents have paved the way for us, so we need to start developing an intelligent and militant youth leadership." Advisor Josh McConico read the duties of officers, explaining them in detail. "We need dedicated officers that are ready to work," he said. Advisor Iris Merida was unable to attend the meeting. Ending prayer was led by Hank Snowden Jr.
The next meeting is scheduled for April 19 at 1 p.m. at mt. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Dixon encouraged parents and youth to all get involved in order to bring about change.
