| A number of local cyclist participated in the annual "Peddlin' For a Cure" event in Monroeville March 21. Many of those participating peddled their bikes 92 miles to Battleship Park in Mobile, raising more than $160,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. The money will go toward research to treat and cure cancer. Local residents making the ride included Linc Lewis, Ken Smith, Rochel Smith Allen Fleming, Josh Fleming, Jennifer Fleming, Chad Fleming, Tommy Gaillard, Chris Bounds, Leslie Anderson, Arlene Vester, Ricky Horton and James Fleming who served as escort driver for the ride. A total of 300 riders participated in the event which was originally conceived by Monroeville resident and heart attack survivor Fred Kelley. The first ride took place in 2004. That year there were just nine riders. Last year, Kelley's efforts were recognized by the White House when he was honored as a guest of President George W. Bush. The meeting was arranged by U.S. Congressman Jo Bonner. A marketing director for South Alabama Gas, Kelley has a program on radio station WMFC in Monroeville. His heart attack forced him to give up being a commercial pilot. (Photo by Josh Dewberry/Monroe Journal) |
