| Former Jackson Nutrition Center Director Nellie Edge (front, seated) was honored with a retirement reception Thursday, March 27 at the H.W. Pearce Memorial Park Assembly House. The event was attended by many of the nutrition center's participants, family members, city officials and staff. Mayor Richard Long presented Edge with a proclamation from the city council declaring March 27 "Nellie Edge Day" in the city of Jackson. Councilman Paul South presented her with a special gift on behalf of the city. Participating in the presentations (standing, L-R) were current Nutrition Center Director Sherry Moseley, City Clerk Betty Powell, Councilman Eldridge Jackson Jr., Councilman South, Mayor Long, and Edge's sons, Robert, Billy and Johnny Edge. Mrs. Edge served as the center's director for 17 years. "She has done an outstanding job for the city," commented Mayor Long. "We appreciate the love, care and service she provided for all those years." Councilman South pointed out that Edge was instrumental in getting the nutrition center moved from the north fire station to its current location in the assembly house building. "She kept pushing until we got them a van too," he said. During the program, plans to build a new senior citizens center in Jackson were announced by Long. (SA photo by Evan Carden) |
