Time is running out to qualify for June Primary

The clock is ticking toward the deadline to qualify for elected offices on the June 3 primary ballot. So far, there is only one contested primary race and two matches for the general election in November.

The only contested race so far in the Democratic Party is for the District 4 seat on the Clarke County Commission where incumbent Joe Hunt faces opposition from Teri Tidwell of Gainestown and Tyrone Moye of Jackson. Hunt is seeking a second term as commissioner. Tidwell runs The Nail Studio in Jackson and Moye is director of Jackson Memorial Funeral Home.

Other Democrats who have qualified are:

•Rhondel B. Rhone (incumbent) of Fulton, County Commission, District 5;

•Marty Lee Parker (incumbent) of Grove Hill, county Board of Education, District 1;

•Gerald Stephens (incumbent) of Thomasville, county school superintendent;

•Linda Goodman (incumbent), county license commissioner.

Paul Bradford, County Commission, District Two, and Clinton Hawkins, county Board of Education, District 5, are expected to qualify before the Friday deadline, said Democratic Party county chairman Lee B. Williams. Charlie Anderson of Thomasville is the District 2 school board representative but has not stated whether or not he will run again.

Clarke County District Judge Bill Kimbrough has qualified for re-election with the State Democratic Party as the law requires. He had no opposition as of Tuesday.

Republican Party county chairman Edmon McKinley detailed the candidates who have qualified with him as of Tuesday:

• Jay Ladell Ott, Clarke County Commission, District 2;

• Chris Beverly (incumbent), revenue commissioner;

• Jamie Wilkins, license commissioner.

Ott's and Wilkins' candidacies ensure that there will be contested races for the District Two commission seat and the license commissioner's post in the November general election.

The primary contests are June 3. Any necessary runoffs will be July 15.

The general election for federal, state and county offices is Nov. 4.

Democratic candidates may qualify through Friday with Lee Williams at his Grove Hill law office. Republican candidates qualify with McKinley at his Thomasville law office.
