Burglar strikes Leroy Post Office
According to Washington County Sheriff's reports, a customer checking his mail Sunday, around 7:20 a.m., discovered the break-in. Sheriff's Deputy Sonya Gillam responded to the scene and discovered someone had unsuccessfully attempted to break into the roll-down door between the lobby and post office box area inside the facility. Further investigation revealed that entry to the interior of the post office was gained through a window on the west side of the building. A surveillance video shows a thin, white male, who is being sought in connection with the incident. Due to the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials asked that exactly what was taken during the burglary not be reported. It was revealed that an empty money bag was found in a trash can at the post office. According to Chief Deputy Terry Beasley, Deputy Gillam continues to work on the case in cooperation with federal postal inspectors. "Thanks to the video, we know what the suspect looks like and expect to make an arrest in the near future," he said. "He (the suspect) took a surveillance tape from the post office in what we believe was an attempt to destroy evidence of his crime. Unfortunately for him, he took a blank tape instead of the one that captured his image."
Beasley added that additional evidence collected at the scene is also expected to produce sufficient information that will lead to an arrest.
