South seeks re-election to Jackson Council

Paul South
Paul South has announced that he will seek re-election to the District 2 Place 1 Jackson City Council position.

"It has been an honor for me to serve the citizens of Jackson and the people of District 2 for the past 16 years and as Mayor Pro Tem for the past eight years. I am proud of our accomplishments.

"Retired Plant Betterment consultant and chairman of the water board, Mr. John Winters was the driving force of the water treatment plant project. As a water board member, I had the privilege to work with Mr. Winters and be the city councilman to contact regarding all phases of the project," South said.

"There are projects I would like the opportunity to complete. During the water treatment project, it became evident that the city needed upgraded water lines. We should continue to give the schools as much support as we can and I will continue to pursue a school resource officer. Other projects range from benefits to senior citizens, including a senior citizen center, street paving, sidewalk additions and other improvements that will strengthen the infrastructure. We should strive to work with our present hospital administration in order to upgrade our health care facility."

South said that he will continue to provide "accountable, accessible and attentive leadership and will be a voice of the people at city hall." While he is pro-growth, he is even more strongly for planned growth. He said he looks forward to the future as Jackson grows and prospers yet retains its small town atmosphere.

"The council members are the stewards of the city's money. The city government is set up with a system of checks and balances, so that no one person has complete authority. I believe that the city government needs a 'watchdog' in place to make sure that the system of checks and balances functions correctly. If you vote to elect me, you will be assured that your guard is on duty at all times on the city council. Important decisions will be made about Jackson's future during this next term. More citizens need to be involved, informed and allowed to be part of the development and growth process, not just a select few."

He said he will strive to improve the quality of life of all Jackson citizens, particularly in the areas of health care and recreation. "I firmly believe the quote, 'There are two kinds of leaders in the world today: those who are interested in the FLEECE, and those who are interested in the FLOCK.'" South said he is particularly interested in the flock.

Economic development is of utmost importance and certainly the economy affects the people. He observed, "However, money and material things are not what is most important in life. The people of Jackson, their daily lives, needs and concerns, are of utmost importance. "I will continue to reach out and be available to all citizens. The good people of Jackson deserve an honest, hard working representative at city hall, one who has their best interests at heart. All of the decisions I have made at city hall have been and will continue to be made with the people in mind. I am not associated with any social groups, informal or formal clubs, or any other special interests. I live, worship and work among people of all economic and social standings. I am strictly independent and for all of the citizens of Jackson.

"The positions of mayor and council are humble positions of responsibility and service, not ones for private gain, power or prestige," he said. Having served on several boards, South has 16 years of experience in Jackson city government.

South serves on the Clarke County Salvation Army Advisory Board, and is a member of the Clarke County ARC, the Alabama League of Municipalities, the Alabama Rural Water Association and the American Water Works Association. He is married to the former Jan Rudder, who has served as a media specialist in the Clarke County Schools for more than 30 years. South is a native of Birmingham, a graduate of Arab High School and attended the University of Alabama. The Souths have three children, Carrie, Laura and Will and are members of the First Baptist Church of Jackson.

"I would appreciate your vote of confidence to continue serving as a council member," he concluded.
