Inmate wants county to pay hospital bill Commissioner Hilton Robbins reported during Monday's Washington County Commission meeting that he has had calls from the mother of a jail inmate who said her son got into an altercation inside the jail in which his jaw was broken and he wants the county to help pay his hospital bill. Chief Deputy Terry Beasley who was present said that as soon as the jail staff learned about the fight, they separated the two in question, but that no metal pipe had been used as was reported. Paperwork complete for booster station Judge Charles Singleton reported that all the paperwork had been completed on the booster pumping station but as of this morning he had seen no work being done. The judge indicated that he had calls from another company who would like to come into Washington County and which would employ 750 people, but again the question of sewerage arose. Hospital board appointments The following people were appointed to the Washington County Hospital Board: District 1 - Shelly Murphy, District 2 - Worth Schultz, Joe Pace Palmer, Mike Onderdonk, Robert Grimes, Emery Mosley and Sherry Ross; District 3 - Dan Pierce, Sylvia Williams; District 5 - Hazel Bumpers, Barbara Corley and Tommy Moore. Request for road closure Two citizens from the Laton Hill community asked the commission to close 700 feet of a road and stated they are the only residents on the part they want closed. They said they are having problems with ATVs and other nuisance riders. The judge told them they would have to draw up a petition and sign as the only landowners on the road and the commission will advertise a public hearing to close the road in question. Other business •Edward Turner, attorney, read a resolution to give Thyssen- Krupp the authority to declare 243 acres they had bought from the county an industrial park. Singleton stated that in original proceedings with TK, Washington County was to construct a fire station. He said that TK will have to deed the county 3-5 acres to put a fire house on or give them a 99-year lease. The citizens, commission, and press signed a document stating that they were present at this part of the meeting which had been advertised as, and was declared a public meeting. •A Community Development Block Grant for $6,132.77 was approved for salaries relating to the mobile homes' part of the Katrina grant. •Leah Williams presented and the commission approved the following to receive the next four Katrina trailers: Vince Dearmon of Millry, Yolanda Kidd of Chatom, Lelia Reed and Luellen Adams of McIntosh. The resolution passed. •Dean Downey, Todd Davidson and Sylvia Williams were appointed to the Industrial Development Board. •The commission agreed to enter into a $60,000 grant with ALDOT for striping Beaver Dam Road, County Road 34 and 36. •The commission agreed to oppose legislation to maintain the water level of Smith Lake. They felt that it would be detrimental to the barge traffic on the Black Warrior and Tombigbee rivers. •Permission was given the sheriff's office to advertise for two dispatcher/jailers.
The next commission meeting is scheduled for April 14 at 10 a.m.
