Judge Singleton: 'Zoning and building codes are imperative'
By Ellen Williams SA Reporter

Judge Charles Singleton told the Washington County Commission, Monday, that it is imperative the county pass zoning and building code ordinances.

He said the issue may be controversial but he is getting phone calls almost daily about what kind of building and zoning codes Washington County has and he has to always answer "none."

The commissioners decided that they needed to hold a work session along with county attorney Michael Onderdonk to try to draw up building codes and zoning ordinances. The judge told the court that his office could take care of permitting, but such codes will not be worth anything unless they can be enforced.

When asked if these were zoning ordinances relating to flood plains or general ordinances dealing with zoning commercial and residential; the judge replied "Both."

"Then you are getting into eminent domain issues," was the response. The judge indicated that he knew this was going to be controversial, but deems it necessary.
