According to HealthActions' Renee Cooper, the conversion has a number of advantages. "The water has a smoother, silky feel than before and doesn't dry out your skin or fade your swimsuits," she said. "This is the global trend. It's taking place in all the large cities."

Cooper explained that Mobile Infirmary Pro Health has converted its three pools to saltwater. "They encouraged us (HealthActions) to do the same."

An abundance of information about saltwater pools can be found on the Internet. One Web site explained the process this way: "Saltwater pools use dissolved salt as a store for the chlorination system. The chlorinator uses electrolysis to break down the salt and release the chlorine into the water.

The main advantage of this is that the main chemical added to the pool is salt which is harmless compared to the usual bleaching agents like chlorine. As such, a saltwater pool is not actually chlorinefree, it simply utilizes a chlorine generator instead of direct addition of chlorine."

Several of those who participate in water aerobics classes at HealthActions stated that they enjoy their time spent in the pool much more than before. "The water doesn't dry out my skin as much and the chlorine odor is gone," said Mariam Altham. "I enjoy it so much more."
