Mass visits Bama's Junior Day; Besteda receiving interest
"I went to Alabama with my father," Gabriel Mass said. "I really enjoyed the trip. I love the coaching staff at Alabama. It's a great staff. The student center was really nice. They really stress academics. That is good because you get the right study habits," Mass said. "I got to talk to my recruiting coach, coach Burns (Burton) and also coach Davis (Bo). They were just telling me about the school and everything it has to offer," he said. Mass said one of his favorite parts of the trip was getting the chance to talk to several Bama players. "The best part of the trip was hanging out with some of the players. I talked to John Parker Wilson and Wallace Gillberry. They told me you have to work hard to get where you need to be. They said I have to do well in school because you can't just be a good athlete at Alabama. You have to perform in the classroom."
But the weather played a big part in those numbers and that's evident to anyone who has seen him play ball. "We actually didn't count any of the 40 times because the weather was so bad," Scout.com analyst Andrew Bone said. "I did pretty good. My stats could have been much better but it was cold. I did really well in the one-on-ones but it was really cold so my 40-time could have been better," he said. He has started for the 4A Aggies since his freshman season. As a junior, this past season, he had 55 tackles, six sacks, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was the anchor for the Jackson defense. In his sophomore year he totaled 60 tackles and eight sacks. "I had a pretty good year. I have a lot of schools sending me stuff. Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Ole Miss are just some of them. Alabama and Auburn are recruiting me the hardest." Mass hasn't received his first offer yet and says he currently doesn't have any favorites. "I am waiting on some offers. I don't really have a favorite right now." He will have a new head football coach this spring as former Southern Miss and NFLquarterback Jeff Kelly is taking over the Aggie program. Although Kelly hasn't seen Mass in person, it didn't take him long to notice the big man's talent. "My first impression is that he and Corey Besteda have all the tools you would look for in a big time prospect," Aggie coach Jeff Kelly said. "They both have good height, they're athletic and have great explosion. They have been hard workers in the weight room also. I am looking forward to working with them in the spring and trying to fine tune their techniques," Kelly said. Besteda, a 6-2, 184 pound wide receiver, was scheduled to visit Alabama for Junior Day but due to transportation problems didn't make the trip. He is a raw athlete that excels on the football field and the basketball court as the team's starting center. "Although I didn't make the trip, Alabama and Mississippi State are my favorites," Corey Besteda said.
"I plan on going back up to Alabama soon. Someone from up there called me the other day but I wasn't home," he said.
