CWEMC announces essay competition winners
Both high school juniors, Ramsey and Wheeler earned this opportunity by participating in Clarke-Washington EMC's Washington D.C. Youth Tour contest. Juniors from each high school in Clarke and Washington County were asked to submit an essay on the topic: "Describe the history of the Rural Electrification Program, including information about Clarke- Washington EMC. Describe how electric cooperatives were formed and their resulting impact on the growth, improvement and standard of living in this area." Essays were submitted anonymously and judges selected the top two essayists from each school. The essay winners were asked to partake in an interview session with a panel of judges at the Clarke-Washington EMC office in Jackson on Friday, March 14. Students were interviewed on their knowledge of rural electric cooperatives, the history of Clarke-Washington EMC and current events.
This year's participants were Brett Bradford of Clarke Prep School, Wheeler, Alex O'Guynn and Meg Smith of Leroy High School, Brianna Penn and Ramsey of Thomasville High School, and Erica Beech and Johnny Howard Jr. of Washington County High School.
The purpose of this program is to educate high school students about rural electric cooperatives and provide an opportunity for a deserving student to experience the Washington D.C. Youth Tour.
