Savage seeks re-election as WashCo Superintendent of Schools
Having lived in Washington County my entire life, I am a product of the Washington County School System. I am the son of the late Clyde Savage of Fruitdale and the late Janie (Grimes) Savage of Bigbee. My mother, Janie (Grimes) Savage taught elementary school at Fruitdale and Chatom for a total of 45 years. My father, Clyde Savage was a WWII veteran. I am married to Kay (Goldman) Savage from the Hobson community. She has worked as a teacher and a school counselor for 23 years. She is the daughter of the late Juanita and Louder Goldman. Kay and I reside in the Hobson community and attend Pine Level Baptist Church in Hobson. We have one son, Kirk, an eleventh grade student in Washington County. My educational background includes an educational specialist degree in administration and educational leadership from the University of South Alabama. I received a master's and bachelor's degree in education from Livingston University (University of West Alabama) and am certified in administration, mathematics, history, and physical education. Presently, I have 32 years of experience in the Washington County School System and have worked as an administrator for 12 years. My experience as an administrator includes superintendent of education, maintenance and transportation supervisor, and technology coordinator. I worked as a teacher, coach, and substitute bus driver for twenty years. These positions have provided me with experience and insight into the many areas of operation in the school system. I understand the mechanics of budgeting, as well as, the challenges of the classroom. My continued training and experience over the last three years has expanded my knowledge necessary for sound effective decision making for our school system. It is a very challenging job during today's times of national, state, and local economic challenges, as well as, societal change. It requires much preparation and thought. I am dedicated to making decisions that are sound and just. Fair, equal, and quality education for ALL students of Washington County is my top priority. "This is the basis on which my decisions are made." I have worked hard to meet the goals I set for Washington County schools during my last campaign. I have supported the hiring and transferring of Washington County residents seeking employment in the Washington County School System. We have established a financial reserve that has been set-aside for unforeseen periods of recession and proration. I continue to promote unity of education and business as we strive to be competitive in mathematics and science. Our Career Technical School has received certification by the state of Alabama in both industry and business. This certification is in areas of welding, carpentry, drafting and business. The most modern machinery available today is being used in the instruction of Washington County students. Our Career Technical School is ready to lead the workforce development in Washington County. The schools of Washington County continue to meet the challenge of national and state curriculum advancement. All schools are now Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI) Schools. McIntosh Elementary, Fruitdale High School, Leroy High School, and Washington County High School are Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) Schools. Leroy High School and Chatom Elementary School are Twenty- First Century Grant Schools, providing after school tutoring, summer tutoring and educational enrichment for students of Washington County. McIntosh Elementary and Fruitdale High School have been awarded the Save the Children Grant, which provides after school and summer tutoring as well as enrichment programs for our children. In the area of technology, we now have Web-based e-mail for teacher-parent correspondence. Partnering with Millry Telephone Company, we are now providing all the schools in Washington County with fiber optic cable. This high-speed Internet service enables opportunities for research, training and Webbased course work (ACCESS). In addition, we have a distancelearning lab located at Leroy High School. Facility improvements include several completed, as well as, ongoing projects. The Oscar Braun Building has been completed at Leroy High School in addition to the installation of field lights for the girls' softball field. Currently we are in the planning stage of remodeling restrooms at Fruitdale High School, Millry High School, and Leroy High School. Also in the Capital Plan is the replacement of the boiler system at Chatom Elementary School. The gymnasium floor has been replaced at Fruitdale High School, and we are in the planning stage of building a girls' softball field. Land has been purchased for parking and a band practice field at Millry High School. We are in the process of completing gymnasiums at Millry High School and Washington County High School. Other projects include completion of a multipurpose building at McIntosh Elementary and the remodeling of the library and cafeteria at McIntosh High School. Two other areas of progress include transportation and Board policy updates. During the last three years, 22 new buses have been added to our fleet. In addition, we continue to work toward the completion of updating all past Board policies to meet federal and state mandates. I am asking for your support for another term as your Superintendent of Washington County Schools. I would like the opportunity to lead our county in the continuation of educational progress. Our county and the students of our county have much potential. I will continue to promote the welfare and education of all students of Washington County. I will study and stay abreast of current changes and opportunities in my efforts to expand the educational possibilities for our children. I will promote expansion in technology, mathematics, and science enabling our students to be competitive nationally and abroad. I welcome the continuation of partnership with business and industry for direction in workforce enhancement and development. In addition, I commend our teachers, educators, and support personnel for the job they are doing. I encourage them to continue their perseverance and hard work toward the forefront of educational innovation and practices.
Please join me in my efforts as I seek re-election for the Superintendent of Washington County Schools. Your vote and support will be greatly appreciated.
