Commissioner under scrutiny for moving of dirt
By Evan Carden SA Editor

Washington County Commissioner Johnny Johnston is under scrutiny for dirt that was moved from the county's work yard in his district (McIntosh) by an independent contractor to property located behind the commissioner's home.

According to a sheriff's department spokesperson, the dirt was moved by Brandon Payne, who was brought to the sheriff's department Monday, March 17, for questioning in the matter. The alleged illegal removal of the dirt reportedly took place Friday, March 14 and Sunday, March 16.

At least two Washington County public officials, who requested they remain unnamed at this time, stated they received a number of telephone calls from citizens reporting the activity. It was unclear by Tuesday's press deadline whether or not Commissoner Johnston authorized moving of the dirt.

Sheriff Richard Stringer said that aspect of the case remains under investigation. "We are looking into it," he said. "If it is discovered that the activity was illegal we will pursue prosecution in the case."
