Manhunt for escapee continues
By Evan Carden
Sheriff's Department is in search of a jail inmate who fled, Thursday, March 13, while working with one of the two road crews that pick up trash.

Shane Phili
The escape took place in the McIntosh area on Topton Road between 1:30 and 2 p.m.

According to Chief Deputy Terry Beasley, Shane Scott Jordan Phili, 35, of Brewton was being held on a theft of property charge. His bond was $5,000.

When he escaped, the crew of six had stopped picking up trash. "Three were on one side of the road and three were on the other side," said Beasley. "The road crew supervisor went to the van to pick up a box and that's when he (Phili) chose to run. The supervisor returned and noticed one of the inmates was missing."

Phili reportedly shed his orange jumpsuit and ran into a nearby wooded area. The road crew supervisor immediately called the sheriff's department dispatcher to report the incident.

Sheriff Richard Stringer and nearly all deputies on duty responded to the scene and began a massive manhunt. They were aided by officers from the McIntosh Police Department, First Judicial Drug Task Force, Jackson Police Department and Clarke County deputies who provided tracking dogs.

An extensive search continued into the night. Efforts were scaled back around 10 p.m., then resumed full force the next morning.

"We have some promising leads we are following up on at this time," said Beasley. "We are confident he (Phili) will be apprehended soon."

Beasley went on to say it is a rare occurrence that inmates on the trash pickup crew flee. He said those chosen to participate in the program are screened very carefully.

"We do not put violent offenders or those with a history of violence on these crews," he added. "Because this is such a rare occurrence, we must take into consideration the good that is being done by this program. Each crew picks up between 20- 25 yards of trash each day."

Beasley said now that Phili is on the run he is considered dangerous. Anyone who has any information of his whereabouts or comes in contact with him is asked to contact the Washington County Sheriff's Department at (251) 847-2202 or dial 911.

Phili is a white male with brown hair and brown eyes.He has tattoos on both arms, his neck and temple.
