Must file tax return to get rebate check President Bush and the U.S. Congress approved nearly $170 billion in an economic stimulus package in February. The money will be passed out to U.S. citizens in an attempt to jump-start the economy which has only continued to go downhill since February. Over 130 million Americans will get rebates in amounts ranging from $300 to $600 for people with incomes between $3,000 and $75,000, plus $300 per child. Couples earing up to $150,000 could get $1,200. We're not sure this is the best way to combat a dragging economy. As former GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee observed at the time, we are indebted to the Chinese, so we borrow another $170 billion from them so American citizens can buy more goods made in China. He ought to have won the GOP nomination for being so truthful, but he didn't. Despite ours and Huckabee's reservations, the checks will be forthcoming and everyone needs to be aware of the one catch required to get one: You must file a tax return. Many folks on the lower end of the income scale and some older citizens and others in special situations do not file and are not required to file an income tax return but they must do so this year if they are to get a minimum rebate check of $300. We'd urge those who don't normally file to contact a commercial income tax preparer or someone capable of preparing a return and see what has to be done to file one. April 15 is the deadline and it is only weeks away.
