Temporary covers embossed with "Capstone Bank" shroud the former SouthWest Bank of Alabama signs and renovation work has already started at the Jackson office.

Capstone Bancshares, Inc. completed the purchase of South Alabama Holding Company, Inc., which operated SouthWest Bank of Alabama on March 5 and the bank's offices opened March 6 as Capstone Bank, J. Daniel Sizemore, chairman and CEO of the new company announced this week.

"We are pleased to be in the Washington and Clarke counties markets," Sizemore said. "We will be offering new products and services, and we are committed to giving superior customer service."

SouthWest Bank was a 29-year-old statechartered bank based in McIntosh with offices in Chatom, Leroy and Jackson. The bank listed assets of $82 million.

Kenny Burnette, chief executive officer of SouthWest Bank, said late last year when the sale was announced, "The officers and principals of Capstone have a solid track record in community banking. This transaction is an attractive opportunity for our shareholders and we expect it will provide our employees and customers with great opportunities."

Capstone plans to continue to operate the existing offices and also plans to expand into the Tuscaloosa County market.

Chris Doggett, formerly with First United Security Bank, is Capstone's market president. Directors from the Clarke and Washington counties area include Sizemore and Doggett, Dr. Glen Bridges, Bobby Bounds, Julian Brackin, Carol Bumpers, Bill Blackmon, John R. Cross, Joe DuBose, Lee Duke, Sam Hughston, Chuck Norwood, Shane Page, Paul Parham II, Rod Richardson, George Skipper III, Gray Skipper, Tatum Turner and Alan Wood.
