Teen confesses to burning young child A 14-year-old juvenile has reportedly confessed to intentionally burning a 3-year-old child he was babysitting according to Jackson Police Chief Charles Burge. Last week Burge reported that Officer Carey Slayton and Inv. Richard Harvey were investigating an incident in which a child was burned in a tub of scalding water, Feb. 28. Police were notified of the incident by Jackson Medical Center (JMC) staff around 10:32 a.m. The child, who received thirddegree burns, was treated at JMC, then flown by helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital's burn center. The doctor treating the child indicated that the burn patterns on the child's feet and ankles indicated possible abuse. Monday, Burge said after talking with the doctor a second time, more information was developed which led them to believe the burns were intentional. The teenager was taken into custody March 9 and interviewed by Officer Slayton and Inv. Harvey. "The juvenile confessed at that time," said Burge. "He stated that he became upset with the child because she had soiled herself." The teen was charged with first degree assault. He was released to his parents. "Officer Slayton is to be commended for his investigation of this incident," said Chief Burge. "He did a lot of leg work and continued to work on the case on his off days in an effort to resolve it." Robbery suspects apprehended •Officer Jonathan Downey assisted the Clarke County Sheriff's Department with the arrest of three robbery suspects around 12:30 p.m., March 9. According to Chief Burge, the department received a call from the sheriff's department to be on the lookout for a 1995 white Nissan with chrome wheels, occupied by three males wanted in a robbery committed earlier on Old Line Road. Approximately 15 minutes later Officer Downey observed the vehicle southbound on U.S. Highway 43 and attempted to stop it on Stanley Drive. The suspects pulled into Windrush Apartments and backup units arrived to assist Downey. All three suspects were placed in patrol cars. They were Kevin Chapman, 26, of Jackson, Lorenzo Jackson, 28, of Rockville and James Jackson, 26, of Jackson. At the time the three were apprehended, officers found that Chapman had been sitting on a small plastic bag containing a white powder substance believed to be cocaine. They also found a small bag of what appeared to be powder cocaine in Lorenzo Jackson's possession. All three face charges of first degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance. They were booked into the Clarke County Jail. Movies reported stolen
•Two movies were reported shoplifted from the Movie Gallery on College Avenue, March 4. The incident remains under investigation.
