The Leroy Bears are off to a great start on the 2008 season. Coach Danny Powell's squad just finished up a perfect (7-0) run in the Tombigbee Classic as the Bears look for a repeat of last season's 2A state championship.

"I wouldn't say I expected it to happen," Leroy coach Danny Powell said of his team's 7-0 performance in the Tombigbee Classic.

"But on the other hand I am not surprised. We were hoping we could play that well. We are working hard to get where we want to be. We are not quite there yet," he added.

Leroy 14, Sweet Water 4

The Bears started the week off with a 14-4 walloping over Sweet Water behind Clint Moseley's 2-3 night at the plate including a three-run blast.

Grant Brown had two hits, three runs and three RBIs, A.J. Snow had two hits and two RBIs, while Will Blount added two hits and three RBIs. Jarette Davis picked up the win on the mound.

Leroy 11, CCHS 8

Stephen Scoggins belted a solo homer and Brandon Jones scattered eight hits as the Bears held on for an 11-8 victory over Clarke County.

Jones added two hits at the plate. Snow and Moseley chipped in with two-run singles for Leroy. Snow picked up the save by striking out the side in the seventh-inning.

Leroy 15, Millry 5

Jones had two doubles and six RBIs as the Leroy Bears trounced the Millry Wildcats 15-5 Saturday, March 1, in Leroy. Brown picked up the win on the hill.

Leroy 17, WCHS 6

Leroy continued to pound the competition in the last game of the Tombigbee Classic with a 17- 6 win over the Washington County Bulldogs.

Jones again had a huge night at the plate picking up two hits and three RBIs against the Bulldogs. Moseley (2-0) picked up the win on the mound.

"We have swung the bats well and we have played some pretty good defense.," coach Powell said.

"We have had a few good pitching performances but we are not quite good enough right now to get where we need to go. We have had a couple of guys hurt that we are just now getting back. They should add some depth," Powell said.

Leroy hosts Bayside Academy Friday at 6 p.m. in the Bears' first area contest.
