JPD investigating scalding of 3 year old Jackson Police are investigating an incident in which a 3-year-old child was burned in a tub of scalding water at a residence in the 300 block of Church Street. According to Chief Charles Burge, Officer Carey Slayton responded to a call from the Jackson Medical Center (JMC) emergency room around 10:32 a.m., Feb. 28, concerning a young child with third degree burns to both feet and ankles. Investigation revealed that the child had been placed in a tub of very hot water by a 14-year-old male who was babysitting her and several other children under the age of 5. The child was treated at JMC then flown by helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital's burn center. Monday, Chief Burge stated that it was still undetermined whether the incident was accidental or a case of child abuse. However, Tuesday, he said he received a call from the doctor treating the child, who indicated that the burn patterns on the feet pointed to the possibility that the burns were intentional. Officer Slayton said while conducting research via the Internet, he discovered that it only takes five seconds to receive third degree burns in water that is 140 degrees. He said the setting on the hot water heater was checked and found to be higher than that. "We encourage parents of young children to check their hot water heater settings and to be careful when placing children in tubs," said Chief Burge. Investigation into the incident continues. One injured in motorcycle wreck Frederick Williams, 32, of Jackson received what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries when he lost control of his 2003 Yamaha motorcycle and struck a utility pole. The incident was reported at 5:11 p.m., March 1, on Oak Avenue between Cleveland and Jackson streets. Williams was transported to Jackson Medical Center by private vehicle. Other reports *An unlawful entry to a vehicle was reported in the 500 block of Davis Avenue, Feb. 28, at 2:37 p.m. Cash, totalling $50, was reported stolen. *Michael Lee Dungan, 31, of Monroeville was arrested by Officer Slayton and charged with possession of a forged instrument. Det. Richard Harvey investigated. *Aburglary in the 100 block of Elm Street, during which $150 was reported stolen, was reported around 4:40 p.m., March 1. Entry was gained through an unlocked door.
*A burglary was reported at 3 p.m., Feb. 29, in the 100 block of Willis Street. A duffel bag valued at $20 was reported stolen.
