The Lady Demons of McIntosh punched the ticket for Birmingham in dramatic fashion as Xavier Barnes hit the game winning shot for a 62-61 victory over third-ranked J.F. Shields Friday afternoon in Troy in the finals of the South Regional Tournament.

With the Lady Demons trailing 61-60 with just 5.8 seconds remaining, Barnes sunk a 15- footer at the buzzer to send the Demons (28-0) to the Final Four.

Brittany Simmons led McIntosh to the Final Four with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 19 rebounds on her way to the MVP. Barnes was named to the All-Region team, scoring 21 points in the win. Jakia Reed and Brittany Crum each had eight points.

Last Tuesday McIntosh beat Providence Christian 77-60 to make it to the finals of the tournament.

Simmons had a triple-double with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Velencia Reed led the team with 30 points. Barnes had 14 points and eight rebounds. Crum had seven points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Demons met up with R.A. Hubbard Monday, Feb. 25 in the semifinals in Birmingham and ran away with a 56-41 victory to advance to Wednesday's state championship game against Spring Garden.

Brittany Simmons was the leading scorer for McIntosh with 23 points. She also grabbed 15 rebounds. Xavier Barnes had 12 points, Jakia Reed scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Velencia Reed had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The win was the Lady Demons' 64th straight (three shy of a state record) as they improved to 29-0 on the year. McIntosh was scheduled to face-off with undefeated Spring Garden (35-0) at 4 p.m on Wednesday.

The Demons are looking for their third straight Class 1A state championship.

"The one with the most heart will be the winner," McIntosh coach Renard Davis said.

"This is the third time we're playing Spring Garden here in Birmingham. It's going to be a game. People will get their money's worth."

McIntosh beat Spring Garden 64-45 in a semifinal matchup last year. Spring Garden won the two previous state crowns (2004 and '05), meaning the schools will own the 1A top spot for five straight years.
