Effort under way to revitalize Wagarville park
By Lynn Pace

A number of improvements are needed at the Wagarville softball field and playground. The fence surrounding the softball field (top) is in serious need of repair, as well as the dugout, bleachers and concession stand/announcers building. The field's sign (left) appears weathered and worn. Below, some of the playground equipment needs repairing, repainting or replacing. (SA photos by Evan Carden)
The community of Wagarville has begun an effort to give local children a fun, new place to play by revitalizing the playground and softball field at the old Wagarville School.

The goal is to make the park accessible to all families of the local area and to make it safe, as well as a source of pride for Wagarville and Washington County.

Part of the project includes raising $20,000 for playground equipment, picnic tables, park benches, grills and upgrades to the softball field. The project, which is being led by Wagarville Baptist Church, consists of several stages that will progress throughout the year.

The first stage began Feb. 2, with a cleanup day. Several residents of Wagarville came out to work and support the project.

The next cleanup day is scheduled for March 1, weather permitting. Beginning in April, a clean-up day is scheduled for the last Saturday of each month to maintain the work already completed.

Ensuring that all existing equipment is in working order and safe for use is the next step. What is deemed safe will be cleaned and painted. The fence surrounding the softball field will be mended and work on the softball field will begin.

An important part of the project includes the pursuit of funds for the new playground equipment, picnic tables, etc. The cost will be approximately $20,000.

Opportunities exist for those who wish to contribute materials, time or money. Another way to support the effort is to visit the Web site: www.myhometownhelper.com. Hosted by Hamburger Helper, grant monies are available for community improvements.

Once on the site, click on "Find a Project." This will take the user to a search page. It will ask for a state and a key word. Use the arrow to click on Alabama and type in Wagarville as the key word.

Click on the link provided. This will lead to the Wagarville Community Park page. An application will appear. Those wishing to support the project can do so by adding a comment on this page. The more comments there are, the better the chances for obtaining the grant.

Contributions and correspondence can also be mailed to Wagarville Community Park Project, P.O. Box 9, Wagarville, AL 36585.

For monetary contributions make checks payable to: Wagarville Community Park Project. Contact Lynn Pace at (251) 247-1260 or by e-mail: lynnpace2002@yahoo.com, for all inquiries.
