Area Obituaries Peggy Arlene Cox Peggy Arlene Cox, a native of Plateau and resident of Leroy, died in an area health care facility Feb. 23, 2008. She was 72 years of age. Mrs. Cox was a greeter at Wal-Mart and a member of the First Baptist Church of Leroy and the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Leon Cox of Leroy; four daughters, Debbie McIntyre and Kelly Estes, both of Leroy, Linda Gardner of Foley and Carmen Grantham of Wagarville; one son, Albert Cox of Illinois; three sisters, Melva Long of Satsuma, Bobbie Jean Lind of Saraland and Jerry Freeman of Beaumont, Miss.; four brothers, Jimmie Brown of Bay Minette, Jackie Brown of Saraland, Butch Brown of Citronelle and Tommy Brown of Malcolm; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 26 at the First Baptist Church of Leroy with the Rev. James Watkins officiating. Interment followed in the New Leroy Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Pallbearers were Jim Bob Spence, Michael Spence, Jude Dearmon, Allen Estes, William McIntyre and Greg Cox. Honorary pallbearers included Fletcher Cox, John Cox, Tony Cox, Don McIntyre, David Morris and Jeff Joiner. Bettye Coil Koen Bettye Anne Coil Koen, 83, a native of Oil Town, Okla. and longtime resident of Chatom, died Feb. 24, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, George W. "Pete" Koen. Surviving are one son, George David Koen of Mobile; a daughter, Ellen Koen Brister of Mobile; son-in-law, J. Edgar (Eddie) Brister of Mobile; grandson, James David Brister of Mobile; granddaughter, Elizabeth Koen Brister of Mobile; a brother, Bobby Ray (Lydia) Coil; sisters-in-law, Reba Coil of Oklahoma and Louise McAlpine of Thomasville; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were Feb. 27 at the First Baptist Church of Chatom. Interment was in the Chatom Cemetery with Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directing. Betty Kirtley Paustian Betty Kirtley Paustian, 71, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008 at the Jackson Medical Center. She was a native of Magnolia, Ky. and a resident of Jackson. Mrs. Paustian was a homemaker and a former member of the Four Seasons Garden Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. Survivors include her husband, Richard Paustian of Jackson; one daughter, Lisa (Dr. Harris) Hollans of Auburn; her father, James Frank Kirtley of Elizabethtown, Ky.; and four grandchildren, Grayson, Ensley, Mary and Abby. The family has requested no memorial service. Arrangements were by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Margaret Faye Ricketts Margaret Faye Ricketts, died Feb. 23, 2008, at 81 years of age in an area health care facility. A native of Auburndale, Fla. and a resident of Jackson, she was a retired quality control supervisor for Boise Paper and a member of the First Baptist Church of Jackson. Survivors are her husband, Jimmie Ricketts of Jackson; a son, Terry (Janie) Nobles of Montgomery; one daughter, Sandy (Joe) Smitherman of Tuscaloosa; brother, Larry (Nancy) Crosby of Andalusia; grandchild, Kelly Godwin and great-grandchild, Justin Godwin. Funeral services were Feb. 24 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Tim Huie officiating. Interment was in the Trinity Memorial Gardens in Jackson under the direction of Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Pallbearers were Tommy Brown, Kenneth Brown, Scott Crosby, Dwight Goolsby, Clint Brown and Logan Ricketts. Frankie Mae Smith Frankie Mae Smith, 81, died Feb. 26, 2008 at a nursing home in Eight Mile. A native and resident of Jackson, she was a florist and owner of Frankie's Floral Shop in Jackson. A graveside service was conducted Feb. 22 at Perry's Chapel Cemetery, officiated by Ray Pezent and directed by Lathan Funeral Home of Jackson. Pallbearers were Clyde Cauley, Charles Pezent, Gaines Pezent, Roy Marks, Warren Marks and Fred Marks. Bishop Phillip Brown Sr. Bishop Phillip Brown Sr., a native of Sunflower and resident of McIntosh, died at his home at the age of 76, Feb. 18, 2008. He was the son of the late Wash and Cornelia Reed Brown. Survivors include his wife, Elder Myrtle Brown; five sons, Phillip (Pearlie) Brown Jr. of McIntosh, Bishop Willie J. (Betty Faye) Brown of Theodore, Joe (Pamela) Brown of Norcross, Ga., Windell Robinson of New York, N.Y. and Otis Parker of Chicago, Ill.; 12 daughters, Fannie (Leroy) Adams, Erma (Nolan) Hardy, Monica (Elder Danny) Thomas, Billie (Timothy) Barnes, Rosetta (Craig) Collins and Dianna Luden, all of McIntosh, Bettye (Edwin) Burke of Chickasaw, Arletha Brown of Mobile, Elder Lillie Bolar, and Dora (Mickel) Whitney, both of Norcross, Linden Scott of Duluth, Ga. and Debra (Patrick) Collins of Moss Point, Miss.; four sisters, Dora (Hartman) Robinson of Sunflower, Annette Austin, Floretta (Frank) Bush and Helen Moore, all of Mobile; three brothers, James Brown and George (Peggy) Brown, both of Sunflower and Dr. Wash Brown Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska; five sisters-in-law, Etoria (Ivory) Toole, Betty Adams, Adell Adams and Willie Mae Adams, all of McIntosh and Alice Adams of Lockhart; two godchildren, Barbara Mitchell of McIntosh and Courtney Crenshaw of Mobile; more than 50 grandchildren and more than 50 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 29, 5-7 p.m. at the Alpha and Omega Free Holiness Church in Chatom. A second viewing will be Saturday, March 1 from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour at 11 at the Church of God Pentecostal in McIntosh with the Pastor Bobby Powe officiating. Interment will follow in the Vaughn Cemetery in McIntosh with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Bessie Jackson Bessie Jackson, 94, of Rockville, died Feb. 24, 2008 at her residence. She was a member of Mt. Olive No. 1 Baptist Church in Rockville where she took part in the Missionary Society. Two sons, Frankie Lee Jackson and Carl Jackson preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Reola (Rev. Peter) Rocker of Choctaw Bluff; an adopted daughter, Linda Robinson of Walker Springs; a son, Jerry (Arlie) Taylor of Jackson; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Viewing will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the funeral hour at 12 noon, Friday, Feb. 29 at the Mt. Olive No. 1 Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Jackson, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home diriecting. Tommie Lee Moore Tommie Lee "Tony" Moore, 61, a resident of Walker Springs, died Feb. 20, 2008 at Knollwood West in Mobile. He was an employee of Ciba Specialty Chemical for 25 years. Moore was also a member of St. Luke Baptist Church of Walker Springs where he served on the Deacon Board and as president of the choir. Parents Mose and Lucille Griffin Moore, one son Eric Lamart Moore and one brother, John Moore preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Bettie Jean Moore of Walker Springs; a daughter, Linda (Kegg Sr.) Horn of Whatley; one sister, Mary F. Dates of Theodore; two brothers, Mose Moore III of Lancaster, Calif. and Henry Earl (Janie Lucille) Moore of Walker Springs; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 27 at St. Luke Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby White, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Hotel Hill Cemetery in Walker Springs, directed by Jackson Memorial Funeral Home. Tom Farrish Moye Tom Farrish Moye, 69, a resident of Coy, died at J. Paul Jones Hospital on Feb. 18. He was a member of the St. Emanuel No. 2 Baptist Church in Coy serving as chairman of the Deacon Board, a member of the Senior Choir, superintendent of the Sunday School, vice president of the Willing Workers and a member of the Gospel Travelers. His parents Eli and Mary Eliza Moye, sisters Emma and Mary Eliza Moye, and brothers Lindsey and Arthur Moye, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Eddie Mae Moye of Coy; one son, Arthur (Debra) Moye of Prattville; five daughters, Lynda Spears of Coy, Tommie Lee (Leon) Spencer of Atmore; Evelyn (George) Shamburger of Coy; Juanita (Willie) Carmicheal of Fayetteville, Ga. and Angela (Walter) Wells of Montgomery; two brothers, Frank (Annie Bell) Moye of Pensacola, Fla. and Eli (Barbara) Moye of Rockford, Ill.; two sisters, Elvira Moye of Rockville, Ill. and Estella Moye of Coy; 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 24 at the Camden School of Art & Technology with the Rev. Heustis Pledger Jr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in the St. Emanuel No. 2 Cemetery with Jackson Memorial Funeral Home directing. Nettie C. Smith Nettie C. Smith, 87, of Grove Hill, died at her home Feb. 23, 2008. She was a homemaker and a seamstress that enjoyed making quilts. Survivors include three daughters, Mildred Faye (Roland) Duke of Grove Hill, Margaret Ruth Welcher and Nancy Carol Marshall, both of Millbrook; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Feb. 25 at Union Baptist Church of Grove Hill with Bro. Carey Howard officiating. Interment was in the Lincoln Cemetery in Lincoln with St. Stephens Funeral Home of St. Stephens directing. Karen Clark Connell Karen Clark Connell died Feb. 22, 2008. Her husband, Roy Connell, and parents Flossie and Tom Clark, preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Connell Hendrick and Suzanne Connell; a son, LeRoy (Rusty) Connell III; one brother, Lamar Clark; two sisters, Sue Ryals and Gini Nelson; four grandchildren, Stephanie Hendrick, Josh Hendrick, LeSchell Connell and Jonathan Connell; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Hendrick, Sebastian Hendrick and McKenzie Connell. Memorial services were Feb. 24 at the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Jackson.
