JHS boys, girls pick up big wins in sub-state
Jackson will be well represented in Troy with both squads advancing
By Chris Sherman SA Sports Writer

Brittanee Crayton
The Jackson Aggies boys and girls basketball teams picked up big wins in the state sub-regionals to advance to the South Regional in Troy this week.

JHS 42, Andalusia 33

(Girls) Coach Trinnia McKenzie's girls knocked off the visiting Andalusia Bulldogs 42-33 Thursday night to advance in the state playoffs.

"We played good," McKenzie said. " We have a four-game season left with two in Troy and two in Birmingham (if Jackson advances). We are playing very good defense right now. If we continue to improve and play good defense we have a chance. We are very excited about the opportunity that lies ahead," she said.

Brittanee Crayton was the leading scorer for Jackson with 18 points. Ebony Hurd scored 10 to lead the Bulldogs.

Jackson will meet up with Handley (26-2) Wednesday in the South Regional in Troy.

Jackson made things interesting Friday night in Evergreen as the Aggies fell behind by 12 points in the third quarter before rallying for the big win.

Josh Ezell scored 22 points, including 10-13 from the freethrow line in the fourth period. Corey Besteda had a doubledouble with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

"We played three good quarters," Aggie coach Marcus Caster said. "We feel asleep in the third quarter."

After one quarter, the game was tied up 13-13. Jackson took a slim 26-24 lead into intermission before things unraveled in the third. Hillcrest nailed five three-pointers to jump out to 12 point lead heading into the fourth period.

"We were playing man to man. They were just knocking shots down left and right," Caster said. "I told them we practice being down like this all the time. We need to stay patient and not try to get it all back at once. That's what we did and the next thing I know it is five minutes left in the game and we are leading."

Jackson will take on Ashford Thursday night at 6:30 in the South Regional.
